Blog- 01-19-2023, About The Madhubani Art and Madhubani Saree

The Madhubani painting, an ancient Indian art form, makes Madhubani famous for its art and culture. Madhubani art originally owes its existence to a place called Mithila, which holds a strong presence in the mythological stories of India. Some of the finest paintings are carved onto Madhubani sarees. The meaningful themes with unique painting styles and structures make it famous and different from other art forms.
Over time, Madhubani paintings became a part of festivities and special events like weddings. Slowly, this art attracted connoisseurs of art as many contemporary Indian artists took the art to the global stage. The traditional base of the plastered mud wall was soon replaced by handmade paper, cloth, and canvas. Since the paintings have been confined to a limited geographical range, the themes and the style are more or less similar.
These paintings are also known for their simplicity; their brush and colors are often derived from natural sources. While the images are primarily made using powdered rice, hues derived from turmeric, pollen, pigments, indigo, flowers, sandalwood, and leaves of various plants and trees, etc. Also, many natural sources are combined and processed to obtain the desired colors. The colors are often prepared by the artists themselves. If the artists come across empty spaces even after completing the painting, they usually fill them with motifs of flowers, animals, birds, and geometrical patterns. A double line is generally drawn as the border.
Each Madhubani saree is a piece of elegant art. Not only mythological patterns but the designs and patterns also include motifs of fishes, the sun, bamboo, trees, and flowers. In terms of colors, skillful artisans use materials like charcoal, rice, sandalwood, turmeric, and indigo, which produce natural dyes.
Madhubani art is an integral part of the life of people in a village called Ranti in present-day Bihar. The women who practice this art form in the town use it to create awareness of social issues and empower women.
